GIRL ATHLETES OPEN NEW PLAYING AREA
A.G.A.A/S ANNUAL CARNIVAL A SPECTACULAR GATHERING The third annual sports gathering of the Auckland Girls' Athletic Association staged at the Remuera recreation ground on Saturday afternoon was favoured with glorious weather conditions and saw keen competition between 400 devotees of feminine athleticism, all of whom were costumed in various and pleasingly-coloured uniforms. Clean, healthy sport lured hundreds of enthusiastic onlookers, who cheered vigorously for their favourites. Spectacular, kaleidoscopic and animated, fittingly describes the scene throughout the afternoon, when zealous girls, apart from the grand ensemble when they moved in mass formation in complicated drill manoeuvres, participated with all the keenness of men athletes in games and foot races, which proved such a bright and entertaining feature of the programme. In opening the function at the old hockey grounds in Market Road, which have been leased for five years by the A.G.A.A., the Mayor, Mr. George Baildon, said that, unlike most of the men’s athletic organisations, the Girls’ Athletic Association had been successful in providing themselves with a ground of their own. He complimented the officials in charge, and remarked that in a very short time he felt that the ground would not be too large to meet the requirements of a body which was expanding so rapidly. To carry out its useful work, however, it would be necessary for the association to raise from £6OO to £7OO yearly, and although tne bulk of this money would be found by the girls, the financial support of the general public would indeed be a necessary contribution to success. The Mayoress, Mrs. A. I>. Campbell, unfurled the flag. It was remarkable, indeed, the competence and precision among the teams in the big physical drill and marching display, for the drill director, Miss Kora Cramond, had had only six weeks to prepare the girls. They made a fine showing. The physical drill competition resulted: — Y.W.C.A.. 1; Grammar Old Girls, 2; Technical College Past Students. 3. The three challenge cups presented for competition respectively by the “New Zealand Herald,” A. Kohn. Ltd., and Mr. J. W. Shearer, were clinched by the girls of the Presbyterian Bible Class Union, who obtained the most points id both individual and team events, and who gained the highest aggregate points during the day. A runners-up cup, presented by Mr. W. S. Pratt, was won by the Technical College Past Students. The teams: Auckland Ladies’ Hockey Association (L.H.A.). Brown, Bros., and Geddes, Ltd.
