CABLE FIRE IN CITY
TWO OUTBREAKS YESTERDAY
Two fires caused by the fusing of underground cables occurred in the city yesterday. The first, at about 10 o’clock in morning, was at the corner of Princes Street and Shortland Street, and drew a fair crowd to' watch it. Black smoke spouted through the pavement, followed by a burst of flame over several yards of ground. Power Board workmen soon disconnected the mams and the flames died down. The other outbreak occurred at the corner of Gore Street and Customs Street. Two fire engines and the extension ladder turned out in answer to the call, but returned as soon as it was seen that they were not needed. The trouble was not serious, but a few electric lights, chiefly those in the Post Office telephone booths, were affected.
