MAORI GETS THREE YEARS

“TERRIBLE CRIME” OFFENCE AGAINST GIRL “You have committed a terrible crime against a little girl, but the jury has recommended you to mercy' on the ground that you are a Maori,” Mr. Justice Smith told Teira Mohi to-day, when he appeared for sentence for rape at Hikurangi. Mr. F. W. Schramm,* for the prisoner, said that the Maori’s wife was willing to take him back again. The jury had suggested that the prisoner, being a Maori, had not appreciated the gravity of the offence. His Honour said he felt he must pay attention to the jury’s recommendation, but, nevertheless, Mohi must receive a sentence to show that the offence must stop. He was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment on each count, the term of imprisonment to be concurrent.
