FOUR REASONS

“A SEETHING DISCONTENT’ MR. R. H. GREVILLE’S REVIEW Four reasons accounting for what he described as the seething discontent in the country against the Coates administration were given by Mr. R. h. Greville, United candidate for Waite* mata. speaking at Belmont last evening. He said it was due first to the utter lack of a land policy; secondly, to the incidence of taxation, inasmuch as customs duties had been advanced 2d per cent, in the past 10 years, while in the same period income tax receipts had been lowered 20 per cent.; thirdly, to an insane immigration policy which had resulted in abnormal unemployment; fourthly, to wasteful extravagance, as exampled in the expenditure of two and a-half millions upon the Mangahao hydro-electric scheme when the original estimate was £500,000. In addition, last summer this source of supply had to be supplemented bysteam plants. Mr. Greville said this undertaking was a fitting monument to the Prime Minister’s much vaunted ability when Minister of Public Works. In reply to a question, he said.he was in favour of a full hour of daylight saving. A unanimous vote of thanks and confidence was accorded Mr. Greville.
