“GLOVES NOW OFF”

MR. OSBORNE HITS OUT REPLY TO OPPONENT “The Gloves are now off between myself and the Reform candidate,” declared Mr. A. G. Osborne. Labour’s candidate for Waitemata, at Takapuna last evening. For two and a-quarter hours about 150 people gave him an attentive hearing at the Foresters’ Hall. Mr. John Guiniven presided. Mr. Osborne said that Mr. A. Harris had made unfair and untruthful staO% ments concerning the Labour Party and himself as official Labour candidate.

He contended that the “idealism,” with which opponents had twitted Labour, had resulted in the Labour Party having men of the gospel as candidates under the party flag. He claimed this to be a complete answer to the charge that the Labour movement was a godless one. The candidate expounded the party platform, plank by plank. Labour contended that there should be a reciprocal arrangement between the various partners in the Empire, so that those entitled to pensions by age or length of residence in any part would as a matter of right be equally entitled in all other parts. Labour also held that ordinary widows’ pensions should be raised to the same figure that was paid to epidemic widows. Several questions were answered and a vote of thanks and confidence carried.
