AN INDEPENDENT LIBERAL
MR. R. W. SMITH, M.P.
(From Our Ov:n Correspondent) TAUMARUNUI, Friday
The Mayor, Mr. G. E. Manson, presided over a very large audience at the Theatre Royal last evening, when Mr. R. W. Smith, M.P., expounded his policy as a candidate for re-election to the Waimarino seat.
The speaker proclaimed himself an Independent Liberal, and if returned he would go back to the House with an absolutely free hand to do as he thought best in tlio interests of the electorate, and of the Dominion as a whole. Though there were three candidates in the field, he regarded the contest as between himself and Labour.
Mr. Smith said he supported the freehold tenure of land, and no one would deny to-day that the Reform Party had no land policy. He explained the work he had done in connection with land matters, roading, rural and intermediate credits, banking, education and immigration. In a lengthy review of the operations of the Taringamotu Timber Company, and the proposed work of the new company being formed to deal with this great milling area, the candidate exposed what he claimed to be the inconsistency of the Labour Party in trying to block the passage of legislation that would have the ultimate effect of providing employment for upwards of 8,000 men.
At the conclusion of a lengthy address the candidate was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence.
