Two days’ threatening weather with only light, intermittent rain culminated in a severe thunderstorm thi* afternoon. Shortly. before 4 p.m. two terrific thunderclaps accompanied by vivid lightning startled the town and the electrfc lights failed for about five seconds on each occasion. Heavy rain then fell and continued during the evening. The Waikato River is rising steadily. October was an unusually wet month for Hamilton. Rain fell on 15 days the aggregate fall being 5.56 in, against merely I.Boin last October. The maximum fall was on the 10th, when 2.05 in were recorded. • * * Saturday will be a red-letter day for the Frankton School, when the Hon. J. A. Young, Minister of Health, will officially open the long-awaited swimming baths. Whether the Minister will follow his usual practice on such occasions and have the first swim is problematical, and will depend on the weather. The baths cost £SOO. and the amount was raised by local efforts as well as by voluntary subscriptions and donations. Built in concrete, the baths have a graduated depth and measure 75ft by 20ft. At Saturdays function the speakers will be the Minister, the Mayor of Hamilton, Mr. JR. Fow, and Mr. A. E. Frederick chairman of the School Committee. * ♦ • Seven bankruptcies occurred in th e Hamilton district during October, only three taking place the same month last year. The occupations of those who filed were as follow:—Clerk, labourer, carrier, fishmonger, restaurant-pro* prietor, salesman and share- milker.

An all-round increase in figures is evident in the vital statistics of Hamilton for October. There were 50 births compared with 46 in October, 1927; - y deaths, compared with 12; and 17 marriages, as against 10.

Building returns for October in Hamilton were almost the same as for tho tenth month last year. Twenty-two permits were issued for buildings ofa total value of £3,646 15s, compared with 22 permits for erections valued at £3,622 18s In the corresponding month of 1927. Most of the perron* last month were for additions.
