The Opotiki Flower Show was held yesterday in showery weather. The Mayor, M. G. S. Moody, performed the opening ceremony. He congratulated the ladies’ committee on the splendid display. The wet season had affected the entries, which were not quite up to previous numbers, although in mast classes the quality was quite as good as formerly. A large crowd assembled to-night, and numerous side-shows did good business. The chief prize-winners were:— Roses: Mesdamcs A. Neilson, C. Gordon, C. F. Shaw and Misses M. Young, L. Gordon and A. Johnson. Bowl cut flowers: Mrs. C?T Gordon. Basket of roses: Mrs. C. F. Shaw. Dining table, decorative: F. Harvey. Pot plants: Mrs. Merry. Miniature garden (girls): A. Upton. Miniature farm (boys): Ted Upton. * * * At a meeting of the Opotiki Borough Council a letter was received from the Auckland Aero Club asking for particulars of suitable landing grounds. The town clerk said he had forwarded information. Messrs. R. L. Carruthers and C. Pipe were elected brouogh representatives on the newly-gazetted Opotiki Fire Board, which it is expected will hold its first meeting two months hence.’ As the settlers on the Woodlands Estate have failed to guarantee £7O a year for their water supply, as required by the council, the Finance Committee recommended that water, up to. 40,000 gallons a year be supplied to any settler at a minimum of £5 a year, provided 14 or more will guarantee payment, nil water m excess to be charged at 2s per 1,000 gallons. A deputation from the Opotiki Agricultural and Pastoral Association requested that a full remission of the rates on the show grounds be granted, instead of half rates, as offered by the council. The association had agreed to let sports bodies K the free use of the grounds for 20 days each year if the full remission were granted. The request was agreed to.
