NEW POLITICAL FIGURE IN NEWFOUNDLAND SIR R. SQUIRE’S VICTORY (United P.A. —By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) Reed. 9.45 a.m. ST. JOHNS, Wed. Mr. F. C. Alerdice’s Government has been defeated. Returns to-day show the Opposition, headed by Sir Richard Squires, secured 21 seats and the Government nine. Ten have not yet been reported. Mr. Alerdice and Sir Richard Squires have beerr returned. The Newfoundland Parliament was dissolved by proclamation on July 7. In a debate in the House of Assembly on May 2, the Hon. A. E. Hickman, then Leader of the Opposition, informed the House
that there had been a split in the ranks of the Opposition. Certain members had organised a Liberal Legislative Group under the leadership of Sir Richard Squires. The Hon. W. S. Monroe (then Prime Minister) said that the liouse knew nothing of Sir Richard Squires, who was not a member.
