IMPETUS WANTED FOR DOMINION SWIMMING
“BOY” CHARLTON COMING? AUCKLANDERS’ MOVE Convinced that a tour of New Zealand by some swimmer of class would give an impetus to swimming, the Auckland Centre is going to recommend to the New Zealand Council that it should ask “Boy” Charlton, Australian champion, if he is available, to visit the Dominion this summer. The centre passed a resolution to that effect at its annual meeting last evening. The recommendation also adds that inquiries should be made regarding the probability of a visit from Takaishi, the Japanese champion. The centre further wants to know if Charlton, if he is unable to tour the Dominion, could make a trip to Auckland. The question of bringing a swimmer to New Zealand arose from a discussion on the Olympic Games funds. Mr. L.. Brighton gave it as his opinion that
better result* Boy Charlton would be seen in the sport were New Zealand swimmers to go to Australia, rather than to the Olympic Games. Women swimmers h id been comparatively well caterc 1 for in Australian visits.
Mr. Enwright suggested that ‘ Hey*' Charlton should be approached by the council, and Mr. Brighton added the name of the Japanese, Takaisl i. to the recommendation. He thought that a visit from Takaishi could be discussed for the 1929-30 season.
