The i ponsors of the exhibition Sir Martin onway and Sir Joseph Duveen, jving fulfilled certain technical ormalities at the request of the iistoms authorities. A private view of the pictures was sid yesterday and a public view is *ing held to-day aboard the liner, as (iginally arranged. In the saloon of the liner collections [ works by British artists had been rranged for exhibition on the voyage ; id after the vessel arrived at New fork. The collection was organised by Sir oseph Duveen, and other art experts, i order to bring the best work of the esser-known British artists under the ictice of collectors. The exhibition ns opened by Mr. Ramsay Macdonald 1 Southampton before the Berengaria ailed from England. The action of the Customs authoriies in America was entirely unexlected. Arrangements had been made or a reception on board the steamer it which Sir Joseph Duveen and Sir lartin Conway were to have been the loets. It was never intended that the 'orks should be taken off the ship lefore being sold, and it was not anicipated that the question of import iuties would be raised so long as the *orks remained on board. This is the irst occasion on which a liner has arried with her a picture gallery of vorks for sale. The exhibition contains 304 works. Sach has been priced by the artist and •is Sir Joseph Duveen has agreed to tear all the expenses the price of any vork sold will be handed over to the artist without deduction.
