NATIVES CATCH WHALE
AMATEURS IN ACTION MOTHER RESCUES CALF (From Our Own Correspondent) OPOTIKI, To-day. The natives on the coast between Opotiki and Cape Runaway, who use whaleboats for fishing purposes, always keep a look-out for whales going along the coast, and occasionally are fortunate enough to secure a catch. Maoris at Whitianga, a small nati# settlement up the coast, are now celebrating a successful whaling expedition. Two whales, a cow and calf, were observed on Sunday, and the natives set out in their whaleboats, equipped with harpoons, with the intention of capturing them. They harpooned the calf first. The mother forced the little whale down until it disappeared from view, and the natives thereupon attacked the cow, which they successfully harpooned and hauled to the beach. Since the capture, amateur whaleis have been busily engaged in cutting up the blubber and boiling It down.
