NEW REGENT

“THREE SINNERS” ‘‘Three Sinners.” the dramatic story of a woman’s ruined life, will be shown at the New Regent Theatre again this evening. Pola Negri, the Polish dramatic star, is seen in this story, which, although European in setting and background, has a human appeal for all the world. Miss Negri gives a wonderful character study of Baroness Gerda Wallentin, who breaks a railway journey to spend a few hours with a lover. The train is wrecked and before she can slip back into the old life she reads her death notice in the papers. In shame and despei’ation she decides to disappear. Three years later, Gerda is discovered as the hostess of a fashionable Parisian gambling house. Her husband. seeing her and struck by the resemblance to his supposedly dead wife, asks her to marry him. She reveals herself to him but, when he hears her story, he is filled with loathing and refuses to take her back. Gerda then accepts the proffered love of an American millionaire, a patron of the gambling house, and sails for the United States to recover her lost happiness. Warner Baxter, seen recently in “Ramona.” is seen as the American, and the supporting cast includes Paul Lukiss and Olga Baclanova. Bright and tuneful is the little interlude presented by .the Stage Band. The setting is an admirable one. The brightly-dressed band appears on a specially-prepared stage, into which is built another proscenium, complete with curtain. The colouring, frocking and lighting are delightful, and the acts follow one another in quick order. The Regent Corps de Ballet quickly dances its wav into the hearts of the audience. and Porter and Caine win warm applause for their effective dancing. Full credit is due to Mr. Maurice Gutridge for the musical side of the programme.
