AT PAPEETE TO-DAY
BYRD’S FLAGSHIP NO LAND IN 4,000 MILES (United- P.A. —By Telegraph — Copyright) (United Service) VANCOUVER, Sunday. A wireless message says Commander Richard Byrd’s flagship Bolling passed the northernmost of the Disappointment Islands, r. coral island in the Tuamotu Archipelago, at 8 o’clock on Sunday morning, 19 days out from Balboa. This was the first land sighted on the voyage of 4,000 miles. The Bolling is due at Papeete on Tuesday evening. After coaling and taking water the ship will proceed to Wellington. The ship passed five miles south of the Disappointment Islands, but the crew was unable to see any signs of life. The islands are inhabited by 200 natives of most primitive tribes. Apart from the ship’s routine there was little activity on board to-day. Captain Brown decided that there should be no unnecessary work on Sunday.
A message from Dunedin says that the whaler Sir James Clark Ross arrived at Port Chalmers yesterday morning and landed DO dogs and several sledges for Commander Byrd’s expedition. The dogs were taken to Quarantine Island, and will remain there to be picked up by the vessels of Byrd’s expedition. The C. A. Larsen, with Commander Byrd aboard, is due at Wellington next Monday.
