PROVINCIAL CHAMPION-

SHIPS PLAY AT TITIRANGI The Auckland ladies’ provincial golf championships, which will extend over four days, were begun at Titirangi under perfect conditions this morning. As the entry is almost solely local, j all the leading Auckland players are j taking part, with the exception of Miss I Culling, who ie away from Auckland. j Tlio new course was in splendid order and many of the players were scoring comparatively well upon it. ■^■ owever » on the new course, most of the players “crashed” at one or two holes. Bogey is 75. and allows very little latitude. At the third hole, lor instance, the bogey is four, and this figure was gained by only one competitor in all the qualifying rounds. The fifth. 447yds. and the sixth. 430yds, proved the downfall of many of the players. The two best scores were those of Miss F. Rathbone and Mrs. Marshall, both SB’s. Both players were 43 both ways. Miss Rathbone took an eight at the sixth, where she topped her second jnto the valley. Mrs. Marshall took a seven at the same hole, following a six at the fifth. The balance of the cards was good. Mrs. Dufaur was seven strokes over bogey on two holes, having seven’s on the bogey-4 eighth and on the 15th, where bogey is three. Mrs. Hosking took 47 to go out with sevens in it at the second, sixth and eighth. She came homo - with an excellent score of 41, which was the best score on the second half this morning.

Miss S. Acheson, Nelson, the only outside visitor, took 4S to go out and 47 to return, an S at the third and a 7 at the 6th being her worst holes. She displaced Mrs. ITodges for last place, the last nine holes being counted to decide the tie.

Sixteen qualify, and the first two rounds will be played to-morrow. The best scores were:—Miss Rathbone 86. Mrs. Marshall 86, Mrs. Dufaur 88, Mrs. Hosking 88, Mrs. Ferguson 89. Mrs. Banister 89, Miss Upton 89, Mrs. Deighton 90, Miss Macfarlane 91. Miss D. Horton 91, Mrs. Wilson 92, Mrs. Alison 92, Mrs. Buttle 93, Mrs. Beattie 94, Miss G. Easton 94, Miss Acheson 95, Mrs. Hodges

Mrs. Grevatt 97—20, 77 and Mrs. Marshall 86—9, 77, tied in the medal competition.

The draw for the first round of the championship is as follows: Mrs. Marshall v. Miss Acheson, Miss Macfarlane v. Mrs. Deighton, Mrs. Dufaur v. Mrs. Buttle, Mrs. Banister v. Mrs. Wilson. Mrs. Ferguson v. Mrs. Alison, Mrs. Hosking v. Mrs. Beattie. Miss Upton v. Miss D. Horton, Miss Rathbone v. Miss Easton.
