FLOOD AND FAMINE
INDIA'S VICISSITUDES DELUGE IN EAST, DROUGHT IN NORTH (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) CALCUTTA, Tuesday. Torrential rain fell for 4S hours on the north coast. It resulted in the breakdown of the communications between Madras and Calcutta. Railway tracks and bridges were swept away in the Vizagaphtam area. A special breakdown train, the crew of which were reconnoitring, was precipitated into a washout. Two senior railway officials, Mr. Taverner, district traffic superintendent, and his assistant, Mr. Temple, are missing. According to A cable from Delhi, the inadequacy of the monsoon rains in the Punjab and the United Provinces this year is causing grave fears of a famine. The wheat, sugar-cane and millet crops have partially failed. The Government’s officers are organising relief measures.
