BABIES GIVEN OPIUM

SERIOUS EVIL IN BOMBAY (United Service) LONDON, Saturday. In the course of an address to the Society for the Suppression of the Opium Trade, Mr. C. F. Andrews said a serious evil in Bombay was that mothers gave their babies opium. Some of the committees of inquiry set up by the Indian Government were doing excellent work, but one member was deeply involved in the opium trade and had bought an opium shop for his son. The Viceroy, Lord Irwin, had almost induced the native rulers to ban the production of opium.
