“TALKIES” THREATEN CINEMA ORCHESTRAS
A recent cable stating that twothirds of the cinema musicians in Britain and 50,000 American musicians will be thrown out of work during the next two years by the introduction of sound and talking films has caused speculation among members of the profession in New Zealand.
It is certain that the Dominion will not be far behind the rest of the world in showing sound pictures aud, to a lesser degree, the orchestras in the picture theatres will be similarly affected.
“As time goes on we will find it necessary to dispense with much of our elaborate orchestral presentations," said one eshibitor In discussing the position. “I do not think, However, that the members of New Zealand picture theatre orchestras need be seriously alarmed. “There will also be important openings in centres where pictures are being made, for orchestras will be In great demand in the actual manufacturing of sound and talking pictures. For that reason the position, from a world-wide point of view, should right Itself.”
