BURST INTO FLAMES

Two Power Board employees had an exciting experience near Pahiatua yesterday when their truck was totally destroyed by fire. The truck, which was driven by G, Smith, was returning through Oete in the direction of Pahiatua when, while descending a hill, the engine backfired. The cab suddenly burst into flames which issued from the vicinity of the petrol tank. The occupants just scrambled clear in time. There was a fire-extinguisher on the cab, but this could not be reached because the flames rapidly enveloped that part of the truck. The linesmen’s tools were totally destroyed. The truck was insured.
