SIX MEN HURT

YESTERDAY’S ACCIDENTS SHIP’S OFFICER INJURED A number of accidents occurred yesterday, and one man is in hospital in a serious condition. The St. John Ambulance gave valuable assistance in all the cases. The second mate of the steamer Canadian Explorer, Grant Allen, slipped and fell from the gangway at Prince’s Wharf when boarding the vessel at about 8.30 last evening. When falling into the water he struck a pile and was knocked unconscious. A member of the St. John Ambulance applied artificial respiration and the injured man was removed to the Auckland Hospital. Mr. Allen is still unconscious and is in a serious condition.

When working on the verandah of the Auckland Meat Company’s premises in Wakefield Street yesterday G. Robertson, of 21 England Street, Ponsonby, slipped and fell. He suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Auckland Hospital, where he is making satisfactory progress.

■Virhile fitting a- hatch, beam into position on. the steamer Port Darwin yesterday morning, a waterside worker, W. Charlton, of 15 Hardinge Street, a married man aged 51, had the first finger of his right hand almost severed. After a member of the St. John Ambulance had rendered first aid Mr. Charlton was conveyed. to his home.

Through colliding with a motor-car in Fanshawe Street, Freeman’s Bay, shortly, after noon yesterday, a motorcyclist, R. Morrison, aged 24. of 19 England Street, Ponsonby, received injuries to his head and left ankle. Ho wa f taken to the hospital by the St. John Ambulance and is reported to be in a satisfactory condition.

In the throes of a nightmare at about 4 o’clock this morning, Mr. John Evans, aged 30, of 50 Vincent Street, put his arm through a window and severed the arteries in his wrist and forearm. He was attended by a member of. the St. John Ambulance and taken to. the hospital suffering from shock and loss of blood.

While working on the Union Company’s steamer Wingatui at Prince’s Wharf this morning, J. Gibbons, of 8 Dublin Street, Ponsonby, had the little finger of his left hand caught in a grab and badly crushed. He was attended by the St. John Ambulance and removed to the public hospital.
