SWIMMING AT NGATEA
TEACHING THE YOUNG IDEA (From Our Own Correspondent) NGATEA, Friday. A very satisfactory position was disclosed at the first annual meeting of the Xgatea Swimming Club, Mr. J. E. Reid presiding. The report stated that the membership was 60, a great many of whom had been taught to swim by the club. Although several carnivals were held and two dressing-sheds were built, the financial position was sound. A scheme for providing a floating pontoon bath 30ft by 12ft., and ranging in depth from 2ft to 4ft., in which beginners and particularly young children could become accustomed to water and learn to swim in absolute safety, was propounded by the president and enthusiastically supported by the 24 members and presents present. Materials necessary were estimated to cost £3O and a committee comprising Messrs. C. Foster, J. E. Reid, H. P. Hayward. J. King, H. B. Sparrow, W. Bowering and R. C. Abel, secretary, was appointed to canvass for funds. Officers appointed by the club were as follow: President, Mr. J. E. Reid; vice-presidents, Messrs. C. S. Foster, W. Chappell, J. King and TV. Bowering; secretary, Mr. S. McKerchar; club captain, Mr. R. C. Abel; vice-captain, Miss L. Luks; committee. Misses J. Rountree. D. Chatfield, Messrs. M. Martin, TV. Beck and H. Kirkman. The season will be opened with a carnival in. November, when the tide is suitable.
