Cricket’s Trial Ball
SEASON OPENS TO-MORROW Big Match at Kings rE Auckland Cricket Association's 1928-29 season will be officially ushered in to-morrow afternoon, when the senior grade competitions commence. Two matches will be staged at Eden Park, and the others at King’s College and North Shore.
The major attraction will be the i Clash of Eden, 1927-28 dual champion- j chip holders, and Grafton, at Kings! College. Last season Grafton finished up at the foot of the senior champion- | ship, but this season, with the return of Alleott and Wilson, and the fact ! that the Sussex professional player coach. J- Langridge, has been allotted to the team. Grafton should be in every way a much harder proposition. Langridge. of course, will not be playing to-morrow. He is not arriving from Home till early next month. Eden is fielding practically the same eleven as did service so well last year, tso that to-morrow's encounter will shed come light on Grafton’s chances for the championship this year. Another good match will be the ponsonby-Shore fixture at the Devon- i r>ort Domain. The chances of the j Ponies of annexing two championship points in this encounter are particularly bright, if the team plays up to its ' Inst season form. The Eden Park bill of fare is not the best that could be provided. The gate charges have been put up from sixpence to a shilling, so that to satisfy the "Hillltes” and others who are objecting to This "outrage," it might have been better to have played the Eden* Grafton match on number two wicket.
However, on past season’s form, United Suburbs and Parnell appear to be fairly well matched, and will no doubt provide attractive fare. On the number three wicket at. Eden Park, University will play Y.M.C.A. At the end of the first day’s play, the student side should be well on the way to victory, as the Young Men will be ■without the services of Bowley, who formed their sheet anchor last season. Tho English cricketers commenced their first match in Australia to-day at Perth, against, an eleven representing Western Australia. The visitors won the toss, and elected to bat. Their team comprised the following: Chapman, White, Jardine, Sutcliffe, Tyklesley, Hammond. Mead, Hendren. Levla.nd, Ames and Geary. England had th© advantage of a good wicket which had been sheltered from the rain that fell last nigLU - and this morning. Five thousand people watched the visitors bat in ideal weather, but departed unimpressed. Western Australia is the weakest, cricket State in the Commonwealth, y€‘t the fielding and bowling of to-day’s team compelled respect. The batsmen aro evidently still suffering with sealegs. Apparently they played solely to preserve their averages, and a dull day’s cricket resulted. Mead, the champion stonewaller, retired with a single to his credit amid ironical comments. Hammond’s footwork and defence were excellent. He was not impressive, and was out for 14. Jardine was the star performer of the day. With beautiful strokes he scored safely and rapidly, mostly in singles* When he was approaching his century he hit 11 fours. He was finally caught at 109. Tj'ldesley took chances in making 66. Hendren showed his old-time style in compiling 55. Toward the close of the day’s play Hendren and Jardine brightened the batting considerably. The chief feature was the complete absence of any desire to display brilliance. ENGLAND.—First Innings.
