Boxer Confesses He Was Trying to Lose

MELBOURNE SENSATION PASSAGE BACK TO STATES (Australian and H.Z. Press Association) Kecd. 10.10 a m. MELBOURNE, To-day There Is a sensation in boxing circles over the American, Van Reeden’s statement relative to his matcu against the Englishman, Kid Socks, last Saturday, which the referee declared no contest, being dissatisfied with the genuineness of the American's performance. The latter, in an affidavit, confesses that he agreed to lose the fight in the fifth round. He was to receive a percentage of the winnings which a third person, whom he named, expected to gain by backing the Englishman. Van Reeden's contract with the Stadium has been terminated, and a passage home secured for him.
