TRENTHAM FINALS
CALANMORE’S HALF-MILE HEAVY RAIN MAKES IT SLOW Press Association WELLINGTON, To-day. .Heavy rain overnight made the work a good deal slower at Tremtham this morning. All the work was on the grass, except some two-year-olds on ch« course proper. Commendation, under a good i\ \, ran home four in 53, and Battle Torque and Bourse sprinted home. Beacon Light, who looks well, paced round, and Joy King, Star Stranger and False Scent did useful work. They will gallop to-morrow, none racing until Monday. Keddar and Shining Armour ran six in 1.20 2-5, Teri and Volplane five in 1.7, Black Mint the last three of a round in-41 2-5, White Fang five in 1.4 4-5 (the last four in 51 2-5). T. FIRST AND SECOND THE AGA KHAN’S SUCCESS MIDDLE PARK STAKES (United P.A. —By Telegraph — Copyright) Reed. 10.55 a.m. LONDON, Thursday. At the Newmarket meeting to-day. the two-year-old classic resulted: MIDDLE PARK STAKES Of £3O each, with £I,OOO added. Bretby Stakes course, 6 furlongs. Race closed with 141 entries. Special weights, with penalties. COSTA KI PASHA (H. H. the Aga Khan), b c by Gainsborough—Cos 1 GRAND TERRACE (H. H. the Aga Khan), b c by Grand Parade — Teresina 2 BRIENZ (Somerville Tattersall), br c by Blink—Blue Lake 3 Thirteen started. Won by a length, half a length separating second and third. It is most unusual in England for an owner to run first and second in a classic race, but then the Aga Khan is noted for accomplishing the unusual with his very big team. Last year the Middle Park Stakes was worth £3,320, of which the owner took £3,020 and the second and third horses £2OO and £IOO respectively. From this it will be seen that there is little to be gained by running two horses in a race, unless it is to have a second string in the event of the stable fancy going under. Owners contributed £2,320 to the stake last season. A remarkable point about the result of yesterday’s race is that the dams of the placed horses have not in previous season’s been represented by winners.
