Season Opening on West Coast
CUP HORSES GET TRY-OUT GREYMOIiTH TROTTING CARNIVAL The Greymouth Trotting Club's spring fixture, which opens tomorrow, will afford an opportunity for several New Zealand Cup candidates to have a race before tackling the big November heat, as the West Coast organisation includes an item each day on its card that acts in the nature of a Cup try-out. The light-harness pastime has reached a high standard on the West Coast of the South Island during later years, and since the rail connection between east and west has been completed, strong Canterbury contingents have annually made the trip through the ranges. The fields on this occasion are on the large side and include some classy customers. The response from owners proves that the new handicapper, Mr. G. S. Simpson, has given satisfaction with his adjustments, and the racing throughout promises to be interesting. The following may find favour with the public in their respective engagements:— Introductory Handicap: Black Locanda and Kanieri. Petrie Handicap: Merry Jigs and Scuttle. Mawhera Handicap: Hackthorne and Travis Axworthy. Blaketown Handicap: Jackie Hogan and Val Logan. Royal Oak Handicap: Silurian and Golden Spray. Greymouth Handicap; Cardinal Logan and Peter Bingen. Diggers' Handicap: Pet Locanda and Red Comet. Aviation Handicap: Muriel de Oro and Real Light.
