BORROW AND BOOM
MINISTER ASSAILS SIR JOSEPH’S PROPOSAL UNITED INCONSISTENCIES (Special to THE SIX’) ELTHAM, Wednesday. Hawkeja Minister of Agriculture, who addressed a large meeting in the Town Hail la.jt evening. the Minister said a huge borrowing scheme seemed to be the keynote of the whole United Party’s policy, but this did not agree with the criucietn of the present Government's burrowing policy levelled for a long time by the United Party. Mr. Wilkinson, the speaker’s opponent, and Mr. \V. j~ Poison, a candidate for Stratford, been preaching pessimism. statin* that the Government had been borrowing too much money, that the deb; was piling up, taxation was too the railways were not paying, and no new lines were being proceeded with. Mr. Hawken asked what Mr. Wilkinas* thought of Sir Joseph Ward’s policv Would he stick to his guns, or meofciy back up his leader’s policy? It seem** that the United Party was prepared risk a great boom in land and hoos*. building in order to get into power. Mr. Hawken traversed the platform of the Reform and the United Parties respectively, claiming that the latter offered nothing new, and was markeu by inconsistencies.
