KICKED CONSTABLE
SEAMAN RESISTS ARREST 14 DAYS WITHOUT OPTION What sounds a difficult feat was accomplished by Samuel Robert Campbell last evening, when he kicked a policeman on the eyebrow. Campbell, a fireman, aged 29, was charged with being disorderly while drunk in Symonds Street, and assaulting Constable Taylor, who arrested him. Accused could remember nothing of the incident. Constable Taylor arrested Campbell at 7.30. “He resisted violently,’* he said. “First he struck me on the chest, and then he tried to board a tram. I pulled him off, and while struggling in entering a taxi he kicked me on the eyebrow.’’ Alfred John Thomas, a newspaper vendor, corroborated the constable's story. As far as Sub-Inspector McCarthy knew, the man had not previously been before the Court. A term of 14 days’ imprisonment was imposed. Campbell: Can’t you make it a fine? Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.: No; you must respect the police and their uniform. Campbell: It was only the liquor. Mr. Hunt: Possibly, but we can’t have larrikins like you going round kicking constables.
