UNEMPLOYED WANT TO DEMONSTRATE IMPRESSING THE PUBLIC Requests for demon«tr«tion, make the public realise the extr« of unemployment in Aucklanrt were made this morning to ts. committee of the unemployed h! several of the workless y The committee had reported to tba 70 men present that it was conUnutn. its programme of sending depntatioiM to public bodies. When the secretary, Mr. McCready. announced the deputation programme for the coming week, thef* was a vigorous outburst from a yon* man. “Deputation! Nothing but depot* tions!" he scoffed. “Talk will nn_ get us anywhere. We want to driv, home to the public that there o, thousands of men out of work in Ancb land. We want a mass demoostn. tion." Other men in the crowd supported the idea of a public parade, but kr, McCready reminded them of how a former street procession all but lapsed. The committee, however, was pre. pared to go into the question of a street demonstration. Mr. M3£!ready added that the dep* tations had been responsible for the placing of 30 men in work at Westent Springs. There were prospects of « further 100 being employed near Tan. marunui, and important roadworks between Auckland and Warkwortk would shortly absorb some more men. The speaker went on to criticise the poor support given by the worklen to the committee's efforts, and the opinion expressed that preference ia allotting positions should be shown to men who attended the meetings. My. McCready corrected the impreu. sion that the committee was working against the Labour Bureau. It had simply been formed by the men themselves to further their own interests.
