BEEF MARKET FIRM f WESTFIELD PRICES A short yarding of beef at Westfield to-day met with a very firm market. Auctioneers* quotations for choice ox range up to 455; best cow and heifer, to 40s. The ox beef yarding was drawn mostly from the southern parts of the province, Bay of Plenty vendors being responsible for several lines of rather well finished light to heavy-weight cattle. The total yarding comprised 236 steers, compared with 275 last week. Top price was secured for a. mixed line of light to heavy-weight bullocks on account —. Donovan, Te Puke, the best pen going to J. it. Fisk, Karangahape Road, for £lB 15s. A more even line of big-framed well finished turnip bullocks, on account the Somerville Estate, Okoroire, averaged £lB 2s 9d, the tops going to the Auckland Meat Company for £lB 15s. A well finished line of medium to heavy-weight steexs, on account W. Voaper, Cambridge, made from £ls 12a 6d to £lB 10s. One of the best lines of the day comprised a line of long-framed well finished steers, on account of a Waikato vender, which made to £lB 2s 6d. Taylor Bros., Taupiri, were responsible for 16 bigifrained but not overfiniahed steers, which made from £l6 17s 6d to £lB 12s 6d. A truck of choice prime small to medium-framed young steers, on account Goldfinch Bros., Whakatane, made from £l3 5s to £l6 2s 6d. A truck of handy-weight steers, on account N. K. Taylor, Taupiri, made from £ls to £l6 12s 6d. The quality of the cow and heifer beef was the poorest seen for many je'ks, light-weight dairy sorts predominating. A total yarding of 229. compared with 250 last week, came jorwrard. Competition was well sustained throughout, and values were VPr jr firm to slightly in advance of ate rates. Top pricer was secured for a heavy prime Shorthorn heifer, on ac"unt Thos. Muir, Mangere, which to ( ' ar °n Bros., Avondale, for V° S - size;i ble lines of wellnished young beef cattle came forward.
