BLENDE MINE CLOSED.—The last British blende mine at Threlkeld, Cumberland, has been closed down. It Is stated that the industry is being killed because of the British Government’s contract to take all Australia’s zinc.—A. and N.Z.-P.A. LABOUR CONFERENCE. —The 1929 conference of the International Labour Office has been fixed for May 30. There will also be a special maritime session on October 10 to discuss hours of work on board ship, and the protection of sick and injured seamen.—A. and N.Z.-P.A. PERSONALITIES BARRED “Political principles and policies should be the basis of the fight, not personalities,” was the declaration made by Sir James Gunson, Reform candidate for Auckland Suburbs, at hi* Avondale meeting last evening. BORROWING AND TRADE “You can’t advocate redyced borrowing and at the same time stimulate interest in trade and capital works of utility,” said Sir James Gunson last evening. He added that he was in favour of prudent borrowing as part of the Dominion’* financial policy. His leavewjking was informal. A few miles out of Nairobi the Royal train was stopped a t a station and the Prince alighted a nd took by surprise a group of people who were \ # ting to see the train pass.
