BIGGER ARMY BUDGET
M. PAINLEVE EXPLAINS AIR FORCE AND MORE PAY Times Cable. LONDON. Monday. The Paris correspondent of “The Times” states that in explaining the increase in the Army Estimates. M. Painleve, Minister of War, told a representative of “Le Petit Parisien,” an all-round increase in pay and salaries, including higher wages for civilian workmen, accounted for a large proportion. Another important factor was the new Air Ministry. The great bulk of France’s military expenditure, said M. Painleve, had been curtailed as far as it could be. Further large reductions would only be made possible by the abandonment of the system of conscription. The Minister said he did not believe any reasonable man would care to take the responsibility for such a step.
