MONEY COLLECTED, BUT NO WORK DONE
ROADING IN TAKAPUNA How long is a local authority entitled to retain moneys received by it for a specific purpose? This question is being asked hy certain ratepayers of Takapuna, who, nearly three years ago. paid varying amounts to tho Takapuna Borough Council in order to have Como Street, which, bn paper, connects Th© Terraco with the lower end of Auburn Street, formed for traffic. A block of land having frontages to Tho Terrace, Anzuc btreet and Oonio Street, was cut up into sections and owners whoso properties ran from Anzac Street to Como Street tvero called upon to find various sums of money to do the work. Tho lion’s share was borne by the owners of th© black being subdivided, but others paid sums up to £l2 10s. {Some owners, however, declined to contribute their quota. The council contends that, on account of its inability to collect all the quota payments under the original scheme, it is quite unable to proceed with the formation of the street, as no provision has been made in the estimates for this work. The question will probably be discussed shortly when a deputation waits on the council.
