NOTES ON THE PLAY ; After a week-end of rain, hail and ! wind, to-day opened wet, and there were showers during the day, with spells of warm sunshine. The wind had Quite died away. In the afternoon heavy rain fell at intervals. The Black brothers established a nice lead in the morning, but there were several pairs in striking distance, and the Dunedin pair picked up five strokes on the leaders in the afternoon, two excellent 77’s giving them

the title. The Blacks did not play so well in the afternoon. In the morning Ross and Wight had thrown away throe strokes with two sixes and a five at par 5 and 4 holes, but counteracting this they had two birdie threes at 320 yard and 270 yard holes. They were then in second position and were joined by Morpeth and Mcßeth, also with two sixes on the way home, one at the 13th. which proved their downfall in tho afternoon. The Wellington pair lost their lead on the inward journey in the afternoon. Out in 40. they had two sevens in their return half, as well as a six and three threes, but their 82 was too much. Ross and Wight, playing very steady golf, and finishing with a feffect run of 3,4.4.4,4. headed .hem by three strokes. Attention was then directed to Morpeth and Mcßeth. who had started away brilliantly' and were out in 35 with 434, 344. 544. Though they dropped two strokes at the next three holes they soemd to have a 75 in sight but the 13th was their undoing. Mcßeth found tlio rough from the tee. and Morpeth got out to 100 yards short. The next two were short and four putts saw an astounding eight on their card. They eventually got to the last hole wanting a par 4 to tio with* Ross and Wight. Morpeth went for length, and got a ditch to the left, a penalty helping toward the six that went down to leave the pair two strokes behind. In the professional event the Galloways, father and son, set the field a task with a perfect 74. but in the afternoon their golf was not so good, and A. J. Shaw and J. A. Clements, both ex-open champions. tho latter having won in 190 S at tho age of IS years, with a 75 and 77. won out easily. CLUB MATCHES The following are the results of club matches:— Pupuke v.
