LABOUR WOMEN BUSY

POLITICS AND LICENSING WORK SOCIAL ROOM PROJECTED Labour women in Auckland are busy—politically and socially—and good progress in both of these spheres was reported to the fortnightly meeting of the branch, held at the Trades’ Hall on Thursday, October 4. Mrs. Slojak presided. It was decided to secure suitable promises for use as a social room, and a committee consisting of Mesdames Kemp, Cassie and Cruickshank was set up for that purpose. Mrs. Soljak announced that in conjunction with Mrs. Gibson she had collected several exhibits of children’s work for a Peace Exhibition to be held in Vancouver during Armistice week under the auspices of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. Questions in connection with the next Labour Women’s Conference were discussed, and arrangements for the Paddy’s Market, to be held on the 26th inst., were finalised. On the 9th inst., Mrs. Soljak, president of the branch, and Mrs. Cassie addressed a meeting of women at the Methodist Church, Papatoetoe, in support of Mr. Petrie, the Labour candidate for HauraJci. Miss Isobel McCorkindale, the distiguished educational speaker on Scientific Temperance, was entertained to afternoon tea by Mrs. Gibsc-n on Friday, October 5. Several members of the women’s branch were present, and a pleasant afternoon was spent in listening to Miss McCorkindale’s view’s on education agajnst the beverage use of alcohol. On tho afternoon of Thursday, the 11th inst., the members of the branch met in the social room of the Y.W.C.A. to hear an address by Miss McCorkindale, who spoke at length on the need of greater interest and care on the part of women in the matter of drinking among young people. At the conclusion the speaker was accorded a hearty vote of thanks and good wishes for her mission, Mrs. Soljak presenting her with a bouquet.
