United Party Candidate Mr. J. Connolly, of Rakaia, announces that he will be a candidate for Mid-Canterbury in the interests of the United Party. Function Postponed The opening of the Ngataringa Tennis Club at Stanley Bay which was to be held this afternoon was postponed because of the inclement weather conditions. Auckland City Mission The Rev. J. G. Castle, M.A., headmaster of King’s School, will be the preacher at the service of the Auckland City Mission in the Hippodrome Theatre on Sunday evening. Mr. Harold Davis will sing a selected offertory solo, and before the beginnig of the service tfce orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Burnnand, will play selections. Gift to Blind Institute The sum of £96 9s 7d has been handed over to the Jubilee Blind Institute, Auckland, by Mr. Walter F. Darby, this being the proceeds from sale of his booklet entitled “The World’s Greatest Power, Woman." In addition, a sum of 130 francs was received from Mile. Mantlet, of Paris, by the last mail. This will also be handed over to the institute. Baptists’ Activities At the Baptist Union Conference motions were carried pledging the union to do its utmost to carry Prohibition and to eradicate gambling. A motion was also- carried urging the abolition of compulsory military training and in the meantime the exemption to all conscientious objectors. The invitation of Auckland churches to hold the 1929 conference in the city was accepted. The Rev. W. M. P. Lascelles was reelected secretary and treasurer. Fewer Unemployed A substantial decrease in unemployment is shown by figures supplied by the Labour Department this morning, men registei'ed as being out of work numbering 728, compared with Sl4 last week. Of the total, 606 men are classed as fit for heavy work and 122 for light work, compared with 685 and 129 respectively last week. During the past week 103 men were placed in employment, compared with 65 for the week ending October 6. i * * * Hamilton’s Pumping Plant As the result of personal representations by the Mayor of Hamilton, Mr. J. R. Fow, and the borough engineer, Mr. R. Worley,- to the Prime Minister at Wellington yesterday, Cabinet has granted the borough £I,OOO to help defray the cost of repairs to the pumping plant, which -have been made necessary by the Arapuni operations. BLiying a Horse The Works Committee of the Christchurch City Council has refused to authorise payment for a horse supplied by Mr. J. Beban, a partner of the former councillor, Mr. G. R. Hunter, whose resignation followed a deal in coal. The horse, which had been in the council’s possession for about three months, had not been seen by the council’s valuer. It is not known whether the council is going to send the horse back to Mr. Beban, after using it for several months, or whether Mr. Beban will claim the price of the animal. Missing Man The relatives of Harry H. Johnstone, aged 22, are anxious concerning his whereabouts. He left his home in Avondale a month ago. He was then wearing a blue serge suit, grey woollen jacket, grey felt h*it, and black boots. Johnstone is sft lOJin in height. *“ * * Camp at Narrow Neck Narrow Neck presented a military aspect during the week when a refresher course for officers and non-com-missioned officers of the North Auckland Regiment was held. The course began last Monday, and was to conclude this morning. About 14 officers and 55 non-com-missioned officers, including a number from the affiliated Senior Cadet Battalions, have undergone infantry aijd, small-arms training and also training in the use of the Lewis automatic and Vickers’ machine-gun. The instruction has been in the nature of a refresher preparation to the annual camp of the regiment in February, when with the Hauraki Regiment it will go to Ngaruawahia. Colonel C. J. W. Lockie, commanding the North Auckland Regiment, has been in command. * * * Taranaki Road Race Only two Aucklanders, J. Lindop and W. K. Francis, have' entered for the 95-mile cycle road race around Mount Egmont. Their handicaps are 15min and 23min respectively. There are 48 entrants. S. McCann (New Plymouth), the New Zealand champion, L. Hill and C. Austin (Christchurch) are on scratch. W. P. Weir (Christchurch), N. Bellringer, R. Yardley (New Plymouth), and J. W. Jordan (Christchurch) receive lOmin. Last years’ winner, C. Tippens, is on the same mark as Lindop. The limit men, R. Doeg, -N. Parker, L. Kopu and L. Standring (Inglewood), receive 40min. The race tarred roads. Cookery Advice The Victoria League has revised its book of tried recipes and has augmented it with a number of tested economical recipes. New chapters have been added, and the production covers fully all the ordinary cooking needs of a household. The additions include advice on cooking and the management of electric and gas stoves. Another feature is an article on food in relation to health and meal-planning for young children. The new issue can be obtained from the league’s rooms in Shortland Street and from city and suburban booksellers. Radio Goods Taken More than 150 radio parts were taken by the Hamilton police to-day from the house of a man who is charged with breaking and entering the shop of A. Anchor and Company, radio dealers, of Hamilton. The’ parts were recovered by Detective White and Constable Sutton, and almost all of them, it is alleged, have been taken from the same shop, which has been robbed six times since June.
