UNITED STATES PRISONS PACKED PROHIBITION RESPONSIBLE We are often told that prohibition empties prisons. Here are a few examples of how it does the reverse: The “Chicago Tribune” reports that “Warden E. J. Fogarty called attention on September 27 to the fact that the county gaol is again overcrowded, having 1,135 inmates in an institution built for not more than 500.” The “World,” New York, quotes the General Secretary of the Lord’s Day Alliance, America, as saying: “Do you know that our prisons now contain more criminals than at any time in our nation’s history?” MORE GAOLS NEEDED. In laying the foundation stone of a new gaol, the chairman of the gathering, Mr. A. J. Cermak, president of the County Board, said: “If the prohibition league had not converted part of the people to the belief that prohibition would do away with the need for penal institutions, I do nbt believe we would be gathered to lay this cornerstone. Too many Americans believed their false propaganda. You have seen the result: Rumrunning, bootlegging, drunken automobile drivers, murder and the need for more gads. I could not help but mention this condition, because this building for which we are laying the cornerstone is a concrete example of the utter necessity of bringing back personal liberty in America.” — Advt™
