FIRE AT OAMARU HIGH WIND FANS FLAMES Press Association OAMARU. To-day. The biggest fire for nearly 10 years occurred at 4.30 thla morning at Waitaki Buildings, a twostory structure in Thames Street, owned by Mr. W. Aikenhead, a draper. The damage is estimated at about £B,OOO. Mr. Aickenhead’s shop was gutted, and the stock is a total loss. Mr. H. Grenfell's grocery stock was badly damaged by water, as was also Mr. I. Martyn’s cycle and sp " ! ng stock. Mr L. Frame, a hairdresser, had his stock and fittings destroyed, and the Misses Cartwright, three pianos, furniture and music destroyed. The stock, furniture and fittings of Mr. J. Cumming, tailor, Mrs. Gibson, dressmaker, and W. Brown, commission agent, are a total loss. The Are is believed to have started at the rear of the building. A heavy wind gave the brigade a hard fight. The insurances are: Mr. Aikenhead. £4.000 on the building, in the National Company, and £3.200 on the stock, *n the New Zealand and Standard offices He will be a heavy loser. Mr. Gren fel, £1.500 on the stock, in the Sun, New Zealand and South British offices; Mr. Martyn. £575 on stock and plant; Mr. Cartwright, £245 on the furniture, with the South British Company; and Mr. Frame. £l5O. Messrs. Highway, Brown, Gibson and Gunning had their fittings insured for about -£l5O each.
