WARNED!
Parliament no Fit Place for a Lady ELDERLY WOMAN’S VIEWS *‘l don’t hold with this women in politics business—Parliament is no fit place for a lady.” Thus Mrs. C. E. Maguire, the official Reform candidate for Auckland East, was warned by an interjector at her political meeting last evening. The person who disapproved was an elderly woman wearing heavy dark glasses, who, after assuring herself that the Press was fully represented, occupied a seat in the front row. Although very mild and inoffensive looking, she achieved the supreme distinction of haying a large constable placed in her immediate vicinity for the greater part of the address. She was firmly of the opinion that women's place was in the home, and took every opportunity of informing the candidate of her views. The arrival of the constable somewhat cramped her style, but she still managed on occasions to discourse ioudly for a few seconds on her favourite theme, but always with a wary eye on the constable, whose first move in her direction generally proved effective. Hastily resuming her seat, she would assure him that she would say nothing more. ' Question time arrived, and she was the first up. “I don’t approve of no •lady’s parliament; it’s a gentleman’s place,” she said. Once again she was persuaded to sit down, but did so rather reluctantly. “She asked me to ask questions, and 1 am asking them. I brought up six and never troubled a doctor.” was her final retort.
