WIFE FOR £3,000
PROPOSAL BRINGS 345 REPLIES Miss Clarice Hardcastle, the 19y ear-old Wallasey girl, has withdrawn her offer to marry anyone who will settle £3,000 on her mother. Since she announced her proposal she has received 345 offers of work and marriage. Her changed decision was mainly the result of the intervention of her father. She had decided to leave the matter in abeyance until she was 21. “I have received 350 letters,” she added, “some full of sarcasm, but the majority containing genuine oifers, the kindness of which I thoroughly appreciate. * “I picked out a number, and am now corresponding with two or three of the writers on friendly terms. The writers were aged from 24 to 67. Miss Hardcastle is now to give what are described as “unique dances” at two local halls. Miss Edith Lucia Trigg, of Sutherland Street, Sheffield, wants a husband who will pay her mother £2,000 in order to improve her circumstances. She stated that her mother had had serious ill-luck in business and had been forced to sell almost everything she possessed. They now had to live in one of the poorer parts of the city.
