SWIMMING SEASON
ANNUAL MEETINGS HELD “Exceedingly satisfactory under the circumstances,” was the summing up of last season's activities of the Mount Eden Amatei% Swimming Club by the chairman, Mr. C. R. Surman, who presided at the annual meeting last evening. The annual report, which has already been summarised in The Sun, was unanimously adopted, together with the balance sheet, which showed a small credit balance. The club's assets amount to £2OO, and the liabilities are nil. It was stated that the council proposed to set aside Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights and Sunday mornings for mixed bathing this season, and the club was endeavouring to have Thursday night set aside as club night. HELPING HELENSVILLE The chairman presented R. de Loree with a trophy on behalf of the Helens - ville Swimming Club in recognition of his victory in the “River Swim” at Helensville last season. Mr. Surman said that they had gone up to Helensville with the idea of assisting the club there. The election of officers resulted:— Patron, Mr. E. H. Potter; vice-patrons, Messrs. D. C. Fraser, W. A. Stevenson and Dr. R. H. Walton: president, Mr. G. L. Taylor; vice-presidents, same as last year, with power to add; chairman, Mr. C. R. Surman; treasurer, Mr. H. Cordes; secretary, Mr. H. Moore; auditor, Mr. F. Flanagan; committee. Messrs. C. R. Surman, J. Richardson, G. Foy, D. Herron, W. S. Adams, R. de Loree, R. M. Sheffield, C. Johns, C. Witten, and H. Borrie; club captain, R. de Loree; vice-cap-tain, C. Witten; lady captain, Miss R. Buckingham; junior captain, R. Frankham; delegates to centre, Messrs. H. Moore, C.. Witten and G. Foy; handicapper, Mr. H. Moore. The chairman urged club members to do all in their power to assist the loan proposal of the Borough Council for installing a sterilising and heating plant at the baths. PONSONBY'S BRAVE FIGHT The Ponsonby Club finds itself right up against it this year, owing to the poor support it received last season, and it looks as if its instructional classes in the schools will have to go by the board. The club was the first in New Zealand to undertake this splendid work in the schools, and it proved a wonderful success, but club members have carried the financial burden so long that it is impossible to keep going under the existing conditions.
As far as club prospects are concerned, Ponsonby has some keen young swimmers coming on, and it is to be hoped that its swimming sports this year are better supported.
