ULM GETS HIS TICKET

FLIGHTS AT BLENHEIM START BEFORE THURSDAY UNLIKELY (Special to THE SUN) BLENHEIM, To-day. When Flight-Lieutenant Ulm gets to Sydney, he will be able to mount his “wings” above his row of medal ribbons.

Though he has handled the Southern Cross for many hours in the air, till his visit to the Dominion he had not gone through the tests fo.r his “ticket.” On Wednesday, at Wigram, he did a solo flight in an Avro, and since then he has put in hours on Bristols, handling the service machines remarkably well, with the result that he can now claim his pilot’s licence. That a start would not be possible before Thursday, and possibly Friday, was the verdict of the flyers after last evening's weather forecast was received. The gale in Blenheim has abated, and the machines in the open are all undamaged by the wind. Although the weather here is beautifully fine, the wind is still very strong, though not as bad as yesterday, when the hoods were blown off motor-cars, and down the coast trees were blown over the road. If the Tasman weather forecast is still bad when the wind here drops, Squadron-Leader Kingsford Smith, Flight-Lieutenant Ulm, Captain Buckley and Lieutenant Simpson will fly to Christchurch in the two Bristol planes for a trip. They will probably be accompanied by Mr. Douglas Mill. They may leave this afternoon.
