TOLD TWO STORIES
SEAMAN FINED £2 STOLE BUCKET AND ROPE Herbert Englis had quite a good story to tell at the Police Court this morning, but its effect was rather minimised hy another explanation he had previously given the police. Englis, a young seaman, was charged with stealing a bucket and rope valued at 5s from a launch on the harbour. His explanation was that his boat was moored next to the launch, and he borrowed the bucket to bail out his boat. He had had a few drinks and forgot to return the bucket. The owner informed the police and the missing article was found in Englis's yacht, to which he had taken them in a dinghy.
Chief-Detective Hammond produced statements in which Englis had explained that the bucket had been put on board by an unknown man, who had been out looking at the engine. Accused had later admitted the offence and expressed his intention of pleading guilty.
Englis was fined £2 and given until Monday to pay.
