NEWMARKET’S TRAFFIC
Subject to the consent of the ratepayers at a poll to be held on Thursday, October IS, the Newmarket borough Council is to subscribe £1,200 toward the cost of altering the tram tracks and the roadway at the Triangle ~~tho junction of Khyber Pass, ParP*U Road and Broadway. r The tramways department of the ounc H has agreed to make the alterations, and to pay the remainder the cost—approximately £2,500 over .. but if the ratepayers turn down the proposal the project will be held U P indefinitely. .. will be seen from the drawing, p l 6 tramlines turning from Khyber a *s into Broadway are to be lifted rh * around the traffic oflicer in street centre, and the roadway concreted over. The curved tramline rorn Khyber Pass into Parnell Road v> is to be removed, and the tram °P at the corner eliminated.
A safety zone will be provided at tViis iunction. however (marked in black) and the inward stop at Station street will be removed. Two new car stops are proposed at the junction of Broadway and Kemuera Road. The ftop on the Khyber Pass side of the Triangle (Victoria Crescent) will be ta Tta> proposed tramway alterations have been the subject of a long and heated controversy among the people of Newmarket, the Borough Council itself being widely divided upon the merits of the scheme. Several lively scenes have eventuated in the council chamber, and at the present time there is deep feeling among certain business people against the alterations proposed in this plan. .. th© same date as the tramways alterations poll, the Newmarket Borough Council will approach the ratepavers for a loan of £11.500 for sewage and storm-water drainage provisions.
