CRICKET AT CHRISTCHURCH

OPENING DAY’S PLAY Press Association CHRIRTCWURCH, Sunday. The cricket season opened at Christchurch yesterday in bright sunshine. The wickets were all of midsummer hardness and were in fairly good order. The best score of the day was mode by Cox (Riccarton), who scored 124 runs by sound cricket. Linwood, batting against St. Alban’s, made 376 runs for eight wickets (F. Smith 85, R. J. Read 47, F. Kerr 55). High School Old Boys, in a match against Old Collegians, were all out for 144. Bowling for Collegians, Talbot took five wickets for 25, and Lester three for 37. Old Collegians had lost four wickets for 62 runs when stumps were drawn. Riccarton made runs speedily against East Christchurch, which team was without last year’s good bowler, McEwin. Riccarton had scored -318 runs for seven wickets when stumps were drawn (Cox 124, Powell 54). Sydenham, in their first innings against West Christchurch, made 203 (J. Philpott 55, J. Young 79). Bowling for West Christchurch, Condliffe took four wickets for 40 runs, Jefcoate three for 16, and Moffat three for 81. West Christchurch had lost two wickets for 32 runs when stumps were drawn.
