MARTARMA TO RETIRE SIGNS OF UNSOUNDNESS (Special to THE SUE) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. Following on a gallop on Thursday last, the Great Northern Derby winner, Martarma, displayed distinct signs of unsoundness, and it is improbable that he will be further persevered with for racing purposes. The four-year-old son of Martian may be given a light season at the stud, but so far there is nothing definite in respect oi this matter. Out Of To-day's Big Race The Hawk was scratched for the Mitchelson Cup at 4.20 yesterday. Outward Bound The following racehorses are on board the Maheno, which left Sydney yesterday for Wellington: Gold Tinge, Oratrix, Concentrate, Gay Ballerina and Narrative. Winalot and the Cup Winalot is engaged in the Melbourne Cup at 9.4, and considering that last term he won the Sydney Cup, run for over the same distance, two miles, with 8.2, those who have backed him for the £IO,OOO handicap at Flemington next month will be on good terms with themselves, despite the fact that he has got four pounds over weight-for-age. Out Of The Cup The acceptance last night for the New Zealand Cup left 25 in. Those that dropped out were Tresham, Crown Area, Battlement, Lady Desmond, Taboo, Bennanee, Town Bank, Overdrawn, Vaward, Countersign, Tidal, Pangolin, Pale Star, Discourse, Limosa, Front Rank, Keddar, Kilmoyler, Arkansas, Sarnia, Colonel Crawford, Mystum, Prodice and Clarendon. Desert Glow is the only Auckland representative now left in the race. A pleasing feature of the acceptance is that the nine at the head of their weights still stand their ground, a fact that must be gratifying to Mr. J. Henrys, the liandica.pper.
