MAKING THE “TALKIES”
DIRECTING IN WHISPERS The coming oC the sound motionpicture has effected a revolution in the methods of motion picture production. The movie star has hitherto been compelled to act to the accompaniment of the hissing of the Kliegs, the hammering of electricians and property constructors, the shouting of directors, and the wailing of violins and studio harmonium.
Now the noise has ceased —the smallest whisper records on the sound film and would necessitate the retaking of an entire scene. In the Paramount studio, every sound stage is now sound proof, since all extraneous noises must be absolutely eliminated. . A noiseless camera shutter has been invented, and the familiar clicking will be heard no more.
Directors and the various workers have completed a system of arm signals in place of the spoken orders, and silent incandescent lights have taken the place of the Kliegs.
