DICKENS FELLOWSHIP
“TALE OF TWO CITIES” “A Tale of Two Cities” was the book chosen by the Auckland Branch of the Dickens Fellowship last evening when Mr. P. Clarkson presided, and conducted what was probably the best programme of the session. His recital of Sidney Carton’s heroic end was ably done. The Rev. A. B. Chappell gave a dramatic description of the storming of the Bastile. A character sketch, “In Defage’s Wineshop,” was given in realistic manner by Mrs. J. D’Authreau (as Madame Defage>, Air. G. G. Grant (Monsieur Defage) and Air. Watson (Barsad). Readings were also given as follows: “French Revolutionary Scene” (Mrs. Ciilpan), “Charles Darnay’s Trial” (Mr. J. E. Green). “The Grindstone and Guillotine” (Mr. C. Kidson), “The Death of Avrimonde” (Dr. Kenneth Gordon), “Jerry Cruncher’s Home” (Mr. W. Meryn Lusty). The session will conclude on October 18 when “The Chimes” will be the book of the evening.
