Quiet Trading
Waihis Very Firm
Quiet trading has been recorded on ’Change over the past 24 hours. Further sales of Pukemiro Collieries, and a firmer tone in Hayward’s Pictures, have been practically the only features.
The banking group is very quiet, although a steady demand at late quotations is maintained for most shares. In insurances New Zealands are slightly easier, with buyers offering 44s 9d. Coals continue to meet with a steady demand. Pukemiros are quietly active nr 70s. Buyers of the preference issue of Hikurangi Collieries have reached par at last, to find sellers extremely hard to locate. With the satisfactory reports that continue to come to hand from the North, it is hard to see why the present market is not justified. The balance sheet at the end of the year should show something fairly satisfac-
tory from the preference shareholders’ point of view. Northern Steams are slightly weaker. Huddart Parkers, despite the trouble across the Tasman, meet with a steady inquiry. In the mining group. Waihis show increased strength, buyers quotations closing very firm at mid-day at 14s. Business yesterday afternoon: On ’Change—Auckland Gas, 23s 2d. Reported—Pukemiro Collieries, 70s. Business at this morning’s early call: Waihi Mining. 14s; New Zealand War Loan, 1939, 4£ per cent., £99. Business at mid-day: Reported— Hayward’s Pictures, 20s 6d.
