RAT-BITTEN COAT

SOLDIER FARMER FINED (From Our Own Correspondent) PUKEKOHE, Wednesday. A dilapidated-looking military greatcoat was the centre of interest in a Defence Department prosecution at the Pukekohe Court to-day. Frederick Reeve, a former member of the Waikato Regiment, -was proceeded against for the recovery of £1 9s 2d, the value of the garment. Defendant’s excuse was that the coat was second-hand when issued, and had been the subject of an attack by rats. The suggestion was dispelled by a Defence officer, who stated that second-hand garments were not issued to trainees. The Bench agreed that the coat was the worse for wear, and ordered Reeve to pay the value, in addition to 10s costs.
