THIRD-PARTY RISKS
HOUSE PASSES BILL MOTOR-CAR INSURANCE (THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Little animation greeted the Motor Vehicles Third Party Risks Bill when it came up for committal this evening in the House of Representatives, and after a desultory discussion it was put through w’ithout opposition. Mr. E. J. Howard, in the course of the discussion, doubted if the proposed scheme would give the same benefits as the mutual insurance schemes already established by the automobile associations. Mr. T. M. Wilford said that it had not been shown that, in view of the comprehensive cover already available from insurance companies, there would be any substantial reduction in the cost of insurance to motorists. Mr. H. G. R. Mason wanted local bodies exempted on the grounds that they had assets with which to meet any claim, but the Hon. F. J. Rolleston pointed out that that might also apply to 60 per cent, of the car owners. Mr. Rolleston also explained that there was nothing in the Bill to prevent motorists from continuing to subscribe to mutual insurance schemes. The Bill was committed and read a third time.
